Zatto — the thinking notepad

Privacy Policy

Your notes never leave your device.

Notes stay on device

Your note text and its analysis are stored only on your iPhone. Nothing is sent to the cloud.

AI is fully on-device

Title and task extraction and semantic search all run on the device's AI. Nothing goes to an external AI.

No ads, no tracking

We show no ads, use no advertising identifier (IDFA), and never ask for tracking permission.

LightShift Co., Ltd. ("we," "us," or "the Company") sets out below how information is handled in Zatto, the thinking notepad ("the App").
The App is designed around a single principle: the notes you write never leave your device. "Personal information" in this policy refers to personal information as defined under Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information and applicable laws.

Our core principle (privacy first)

In the App, both note storage and AI organizing (extracting titles, summaries, tasks, people, and dates, and semantic search) happen entirely on your device. The contents of your notes are never sent to our servers or to any external AI service. The App also works fully offline.

The only thing we send off the device is anonymous usage data (facts about actions) used to improve the App's quality, as described below.

Information stored only on your device

The following is stored in an on-device database and is not sent to us or to any third party:

  • Your note text (the content you type)
  • Titles, summaries, and keywords generated by the AI
  • Extracted tasks (to-dos) and their due dates
  • Names of people mentioned in your notes
  • Analysis data generated on-device for semantic search (embeddings)
  • App settings such as your free-usage counter
We cannot access this data. Note that if you have enabled an iOS device backup (such as iCloud Backup), this data may be included in that device backup through the operating system. In that case the data is managed under Apple's iCloud and we are not involved.

Information we collect (usage analytics)

To improve the App's quality, we collect anonymous usage data through Firebase Analytics (Google LLC). We collect only "facts about actions" and never the contents of your notes.

3.1 What we collect

  • Feature events (for example: a note was created / structured by AI / searched / a reminder was set / a Siri action was used / a paywall was shown / a purchase completed, failed, or was restored)
  • Metadata attached to each event (the "band" of a note's character count, the "band" of extracted item counts, which AI engine was used, free vs. paid, etc.)
  • General usage statistics that Firebase collects by default, such as app launches, sessions, device type, OS version, and app version

3.2 What we never collect

  • Note text, titles, summaries, or keywords
  • People's names, search queries, or other content you enter
Character and item counts are always rounded into ranges (e.g., short / medium / long) before being sent. We do not use the advertising identifier (IDFA) or cross-device tracking, and we do not show the App Tracking Transparency permission prompt.

In-app purchases and subscriptions

The App is free to download, and note storage is free. AI organizing is free for your first 3 times; after that, the paid "Pro" plan (monthly or yearly, with a 7-day free trial) unlocks unlimited organizing.

  • Payment details: Purchases are processed through Apple's App Store. Payment details such as credit card numbers are handled by Apple; we do not receive them.
  • Subscription status: To manage and verify your subscription (active/inactive, plan type such as monthly or yearly, and trial status), we use RevenueCat (RevenueCat, Inc.). RevenueCat receives your purchase and subscription status together with an anonymous in-app identifier. We do not share your name, email address, or other contact details.
  • Purchase facts: The fact that a purchase was started, completed, failed, or restored is also recorded as an anonymous event in the usage analytics described above (and may include amount and currency).
  • Advertising measurement (Apple Search Ads): If we run Apple Search Ads, we collect an "attribution token" provided by Apple's AdServices to measure their effectiveness, and share it via RevenueCat. This lets us understand anonymously which ad or keyword led to a subscription. It uses Apple's privacy-preserving mechanism — it is not the advertising identifier (IDFA) and does not require tracking permission (ATT). It contains no personal information such as your name.

Reminders, Siri, and Shortcuts

Reminders for extracted tasks are set as local notifications on your device. The content and timing of a reminder are never sent to an external server.

The App supports Siri actions such as "make a note in Zatto," and Shortcuts (App Intents) for setting reminders and composing email. This processing happens on your device. Siri's voice recognition follows Apple's Siri system. Composing an email opens your device's mail app with the body pre-filled; it does not go through our servers.

What the App does not collect

The App does not use the following information or capabilities:

  • Advertising or ad SDKs, and advertising identifiers such as IDFA
  • Sending your input to external AI / machine-learning APIs (such as OpenAI, Google Gemini, or Claude) — all AI runs on-device
  • Location, contacts, photos, microphone, or camera
  • Account registration (email address, password, or social sign-in)

Third-party services (disclosure and processors)

We use the following external services to the extent necessary to provide and improve the App:

  • Firebase Analytics (Google LLC): anonymous usage analytics
  • RevenueCat (RevenueCat, Inc.): subscription status management and advertising attribution processing
  • Apple (App Store / Search Ads): app distribution, payment processing, and Search Ads attribution (AdServices)
Each is used only to the extent necessary to provide and improve the App. How each company handles data is governed by its own privacy policy.

International transfer

Some of the external services above operate servers outside Japan (for example, in the United States). As a result, usage data and subscription status may be processed and stored outside Japan. We handle such data appropriately in accordance with applicable laws.

Security

Keeping your primary data — such as notes — on the device is itself the most reliable safeguard. Analytics data sent off the device contains no note content, is anonymized, and is transmitted over encrypted connections. In the unlikely event of a leak involving information we handle, we will work to confirm the facts, investigate the cause, prevent recurrence, and take the steps required by law.

Retention and deletion

On-device data is retained for as long as you use the App. You can delete it at any time by deleting individual notes or by uninstalling the App (uninstalling erases the on-device data).

The usage analytics we collect is retained for as long as necessary to achieve its purpose, and is appropriately deleted or anonymized when no longer needed.

Your rights

You may request disclosure, correction, suspension of use, or deletion of the information we handle. On-device data can be deleted from within the App, and subscriptions can be managed or canceled from your device's Settings (your Apple ID subscriptions). For other requests or questions, please contact us using the details below. After verifying your identity, we will respond as promptly as possible in accordance with the law.

Children's privacy

The App is not designed to collect personal information from a specific age group. No account registration is required, and note content stays on the device. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children.

Changes to this policy

We may revise this policy in response to changes in laws or the service. If there are significant changes, we will announce them on this page or on our website.
